The Mexican Blind Fish
The Mexican Blind Fish
( Typhliasina pearsei )
The Mexican Blind Fish or "Dama Blanca" ( white lady) inhabits the cenotes and aquifers in the Yucatán Península of México, where the water temperature is between 23 and 27° Celcious degrees throughout the year.
Also known as the "Mexican Blind Brotula" is the top predator in the Yucatán aquifer system. It feeds on crustaceans such as shrimps and mysids that also inhabit the aquifers. It does not react to light but it is very sensitive to vibrations. It standard lenght is about 9.7 cm. The skin does not contain pigments , making the fish appear pinkish-white or albine. It has a comet shape body and compress with no eyes. Anal and dorsal large fins
It is a viviparous fish giving birth sometimes to a dozen young between december and february. The juveniles normally have a yellowish color and have a lenght of aprox 3.7 cm
Currently la "Dama Blanca" has a -Near Threatened- status since it is facing a water pollution threat due to the aquifers where it lives are just below human inhabited areas with poor sanitary arrangements that leak in excess nitrates from water wastes and the coliform bacteria
If you ever encountered this fish while cavern diving or cave you will have a unique moment with this beautiful cenote dancer for sure.

1st Dive:
Dive Site : Cenote Zapote ( Hell Bells)
Max Depth : 100 feet/ 30 meters
Bottom Time : 35 minutes.
The day started with a huuuge rain over Playa del Carmen and Puerto Morelos but a little bit after and for our surprise the highway was totally dry on the way to Cenote Zapote. After the briefing and dive gear set up we head towards the entrace to start our surface safety checks. All good ! and went down on this kind of wine´s bottle neck. At approximately 80 feet / 24 meters, our ceiling started with some of the amazing formations known as Biothems, and as we progressed depper inside the ceiling huuge structures like bells started to show, some of them like the size of a car. The only underwater formations on these environments that continue to grow due to the prehistoric bacteria that live inside of them. Visibility was great although we had rain before, so we did a complete turn around the gallery and observe the dense Hydrogen Sulfide cloud below us, as our customers began to reach their thirds on their gas supply and also the safe margin of the no decompression limits at that depth, we began our ascent making some deep stops and enyoing some of the views on our way up. Rain started to fall upon us while we where protected uderwater while we completed our final safety stop.

Into Xibalbá- Cenote Dive Trip Report 10 / 11 / 2020

Cenote : Dos Ojos / Ejido Jacinto Pat.
Dive 1
Dive site : Barbie Line
Max Depth: 20 feet/ 6 meters
Bottom Time : 50 minutes
We started with some important safety checks at the surface like the valve checks bubble check, weight checks and light checks, something pretty common and important before every cavern or cave dive, and we submerged to start on the left side of the circuit from the Barbie Line. We were almost alone as we were one of the first groups starting that day. Suddenly huge columns appeared in front of us as we swam into the cavern in our way to West Eye to meet the famous barbie in the cavern line. After approximately 25 minutes of flying into space like rooms full of stalactites we got there and began our way back with the current pushing us slightly back to the East Eye. On our way back we got through the "time travel tunnel " and then we saw a couple of fossils and crusted shells on some rocks, and the spectacular view of the light coming from the entrance point.

1st dive.
Dive Site: Cozumel, Palancar Gardens.
Water Conditions: Easy current, small swell on the surface, 60-70 feet visibility, water temperature 80 F approximately
Max Depth: 80 feet / 24 meters
Bottom Time:53 min
The dive was pretty awesome starting like usually on shallow checking everything was fine, weights, gas, gear, awareness, and then we head towards the Palancar wall, where we went into the beautiful swim throughs observing the sponges, the colors and big pinnacles full of color and life, once in a while a big pink snapper or yellow one showing off around the protected areas of the reef. Beautiful Caribbean Jawfish showing himself out of his cove for us while we were passing by to get to another interesting ocean swim through to come out into the blue of the wall and spot a nice Hawksbill baby turtle feeding from the reef and seeking protection from the reef.
After that at aprox minute 45 we went to the shallows preparing to make our safety stop to get later on onboard our boat.
2nd dive
Dive Site : La Francesa
Max Depth : 60 feet / 18 meters
Bottom Time : 55 min
Water Conditions: Easy current, small swell on the surface, 60-70 feet visibility, water temperature 80 F approximately
We started the dive in front of Palancar Restaurant, the usual landmark for the beginning of La Francesa and right away we spotted a juvenile beautiful Nurse Shark, seeming sleeping after the next group pass by it swan away in a majestic way. We continue on and at around 60 feet we located an awesome character known locally as the endemic Splendid Toadfish, showing his barbs and a little bit of curious towards us but juvenile and shy to go back to it´s den. Little bit ahead drifting with the current nice and easy this day we spotted huuuge Caribbean Lobsters, a beauriful and tiny Drum Fish alone into the sponges swimming like crazy trying to get some food. We continue drifting into this amazinf dive spot to locate a nice Queen Trigerfih, some Black Durgeons and schools of Horse Eye Jacks. When we thought that was all,, a big mama Nurse Shark appeared of the side of the reef, very laidback, showing off its gills and letting us know that was his reef. =).

Scuba Diving , Yoga and Relaxation
By Luis Antonio Velasco Arriaga

Many spiritual traditions focus on the need to control the way you breathe so you can control your mind and emotions and Scuba Diving is not the exception. When you submerge yourself into that new underwater world suddenly your brain triggers what we call the "mammalian diving reflex" which slows down your heart rate to supply blood to the more specific organs improving oxygen use during the immersion. Naturally as many scientists have said we all became from the ocean long time ago, and this special reflex is what our body does when it remembers its origins, exactly like dolphins and whales do
When you start to be aware about this and your incorporate concious breathing during your dives and your training then you begin to experience that great feeling of connection and relaxation. The same one you experience when you practice Yoga and Meditation.
In fact breathing techniques are one of the pillars and fundamentals of every diving course, which helps you to focus and reduce as well your air consumption. Once you are align with yourself and your calmness and you start diving then you start to feel like an aquatic organism, connected to everything you start to see underwater and of course enjoying way more Scuba Diving.
If you put it this way, we all were divers even before we were born inside our mother´s womb
